The Master Builder

This is part of my Forever Grateful project.
As I was selling my home and placing my business on hiatus for a period of time, I took portraits of about 30 people who influenced my career over the past 12 years. This was my way of saying “Thanks” and letting everyone know that I couldn’t have done it without their support.

Guy,

With all the backgrounds you’ve built and walls you’ve painted for me, you, my friend, have given me more time and manpower than anyone else. Whenever I have needed you, you have been there for me at a drop of a hat… an Indiana Jones hat at that.

You came to me for headshots within the first year of shooting in my photography studio. I had been struggling with making the change from shooting in the streets and alleyways of Venice, CA, to working in a studio environment. The staleness of my studio sets was missing the life that was thriving in my Venice headshots. During our shoot, you looked around at the poorly constructed walls I had built and painted. You casually said, “Would you like me to come over sometime and rebuild these walls the right way?” Oh boy, you didn’t know what you were getting yourself into.

I know headshots are about the subject and not the backgrounds, but your richly textured pieces of art helped bring a life to my studio work that was missing. I owe you so much. All of the shoots, lunches, drinks and cookies I’ve given you don’t even come close to adding up to all that you have given me.

Forever grateful,

Blake

The Story Behind the Shoot:

First off, Guy is a huge fan of Indiana Jones. So I had to get a shot on him in his Indie attire.

Guy is also a HUGE Disney fan. In fact, when we first shot back in 2004 and he offered to fix my walls, I offered to refund the money he had paid me, but he wouldn’t have it. He said that someday I could repay him by taking some photos of him at Disney. 11 years later and we finally got together to do the shoot.

Little did I know that I was going with my own private tour guide! Everywhere we went he told me about the history and pointed out the details that most people pass on by.
